An ode to my hubby and all pilots in and out of the military.  :)

The Night Before Christmas – Aviation Style

‘Twas the night before Christmas, on the ramp by the lobby,
Not a copter was stirring, not even a Robbie.
The aircraft were fastened to tie downs with care,
In hopes that come morning, they all would be there.

The fuel trucks were nestled, all snug in their spots,
With gusts from two-forty at 39 knots.
I slumped at the fuel desk, now finally caught up,
And settled down comfortably, resting my butt.

When the radio lit up with noise and with chatter,
I turned up the scanner to see what was the matter.
A voice clearly heard over static and snow,
Called for clearance to land at the airport below.

He barked his transmission so lively and quick,
I’d have sworn that the call sign he used was “St. Nick”.
I ran to the panel to turn up the lights,
The better to welcome this magical flight.

He called his position, no room for denial,
“St. Nicholas One, turnin’ left onto final.”
And what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a Rutan-built sleigh, with eight Rotax Reindeer!

With vectors to final, down the glideslope he came,
As he passed all fixes, he called them by name:
“Now Ringo! Now Tolga! Now Trini and Bacun!
On Comet! On Cupid!” What pills was he takin’?

While controllers were sittin’, and scratchin’ their head,
They phoned to my office, and I heard it with dread,
The message they left was both urgent and dour:
“When Santa pulls in, have him please call the tower.”

He landed like silk, with the sled runners sparking,
Then I heard “Left at Charlie,” and “Taxi to parking.”
He slowed to a taxi, turned off of three-oh
And stopped on the ramp with a “Ho, ho-ho-ho…”

He stepped out of the sleigh, but before he could talk,
I ran out to meet him with my best set of chocks.
His red helmet and goggles were covered with frost
And his beard was all blackened from Reindeer exhaust.

His breath smelled like peppermint, gone slightly stale,
And he puffed on a pipe, but he didn’t inhale.
His cheeks were all rosy and jiggled like jelly,
His boots were as black as a cropduster’s belly.

He was chubby and plump, in his suit of bright red,
And he asked me to “fill it, with hundred low-lead.”
He came dashing in from the snow-covered pump,
I knew he was anxious for drainin’ the sump.

I spoke not a word, but went straight to my work,
And I filled up the sleigh, but I spilled like a jerk.
He came out of the restroom, and sighed in relief,
Then he picked up a phone for a Flight Service brief.

And I thought as he silently scribed in his log,
These reindeer could land in an eighth-mile fog.
He completed his pre-flight, from the front to the rear,
Then he put on his headset, and I heard him yell, “Clear!”

And laying a finger on his push-to-talk,
He called up the tower for clearance and squawk.
“Take taxiway Charlie, the southbound direction,
Turn right three-two-zero at pilot’s discretion”

He sped down the runway, the best of the best,
“Your traffic’s an Agusta, inbound from the west.”
Then I heard him proclaim, as he climbed thru the night,
“Merry Christmas to all! I have traffic in sight

Texas is huge. HUGE! We’re calling Lubbock home for the next 19 months and I keep poking around on the Internet, looking for craft fairs and holiday shows in the area, not only to be a possible vendor at, but for SHOPPING! I love holiday markets! We just moved from Germany so I have been to some pretty amazing Christmas markets, however, there is something to be said about good ole American country markets and their unique assortment of items – homemade English toffees, primitive ornaments, baby quilts, jolly stuffed Santas and wooden signs. And buying stateside is easier on my wallet. I much prefer paying $3 for an ornament versus 6 Euro ($9!).

Anyways, I am officially in the mood for craft shows and guess what?  I get to be a vendor at one….without even being there!  Amanda, of Loveable Creations on Etsy, lives in Lubbock and has invited me to collaborate with her for not only her own storefront but for the craft fair season!  And Amanda is headed to Fredericksburg, Texas over the Thanksgiving weekend to do a huge Black Friday into Saturday craft show!  That is over a 6 hour drive for a craft fair but thankfully Amanda has family in the area so they are killing two birds with one stone and paying them a Thanksgiving visit as well.  :)  I am so excited to see how FrayBabyBibsandMore items do deep in the heart and I’m crossing my fingers that it brings some new business my way. (To read more about the AWESOME German town just north of San Antonio, click here!)

I’m sending Amanda off with a huge assortment of bibs and burp cloths, a few comfort lovies and hopefully a bin chock full of baby doll diapers!  They have been figuratively selling off the shelves of my Etsy shop and I’m trying to get a leg up and sewing them by the dozens!

If you can’t make it to Fredericksburg for the HUGE craft fair, then visit our Etsy shops – LoveableCreations and FrayBabyBibsandMore for a great selection of presents and stocking stuffers for the little ones!  Have holiday pictures coming up and you need some pizazz for the pictures? You need to check out these ostrich puffs that Amanda has in shop!  So fun!  And if you or Santa is bringing baby dolls for your daughter, granddaughter, niece or neighbor, check out my shop for those baby doll diapers!  And on Thanksgiving and Black Friday, there will be huge sales and promotional giveaways so come back and shop with us!

3910559222_d235d10c62_mI stumbled upon a FANTASTIC blog today.  Why fantastic?  Well, I just spent $18 plus shipping for 100 fantastic itty bitty fabric labels for me to sew into my FrayBaby items.  I shopped around and holy cow, labels can be expensive!!  And if they aren’t expensive, the quality can be questionable. I’ve heard of online fabric shops where you can design and print your own fabrics and as cool as that sounded to me, the price tag was NOT, $18 a yard! Well JayBirdQuilts.com clued me in on using that $18 a yard fabric to your advantage. LABELS! She made labels for her gorgeous heirloom quality quilts so they are larger, she was excited to get 90 4 inch by 4 inch labels.  My labels are all of 1.5 inches by .5 inch and 2 inches by 1 inch.  I didn’t do the math but that is a TON.  AND, you don’t have to get all 1 type of label, I could design my fabric with 1/2 yard larger labels and 1/2 yard smaller labels.  I still think designing my own fabric would be completely awesome but in the meantime, I’ll design my own labels and get them printed at Spoonflower.com, hmmm, that is, when I have the time!  :)

Head over to JayBirdQuilts.com to read the entire tutorial. Thanks JayBird!
